Kangaroos are marsupial mammals that are native to Australia and nearby islands. Like other marsupials (including koalas and wombats), female kangaroos have a pouch in which they carry and suckle their young. One member of the kangaroo family, the red kangaroo, may reach 7 feet in height and weigh over 200 pounds. Its top speed is about 40 miles an hour, with each hop extending as much as 18 feet.
