There are several birds in Australia and North America that are called "catbirds," because . . . well . . . because they make a sound like cats meowing. How that connects with the southern Americanism "being in the catbird seat," which means "sitting pretty," is a mystery to me. However, the expression was popularized by baseball announcer Red Barber and by James Thurber's story "The Catbird Seat."
